Update on Final Project.

After much testing, review, and discussion with various advisers, it has become clear that what we need for our project is a peristaltic pump. This is so for several reasons. One, it can, and will, pump against gravity. Two, it will pump air and can continue running while dry to eject the remainder of the liquid from the tubing. Three, a peristaltic pump isolates the electronics from the liquid, which is much better for our application. So today I caught up with the guys from Omega Engineering to talk to them about their 100 Series. The products looks perfect for our application, but the DC version will take eight weeks to ship!

With the help of teflon water-proof tape, this coupler attached our tubing with the 5171 tubing;


Anti-reflux valve from inside a Moveen syphon bag - we pulled apart one of the bags to see the pieces..this is a surprisingly effective simple design:


Tip of the Moveen syphon bag. This bag doesn't seems to work very well unless it's held upside-down and squeezed to eliminate the liquid.



This is the 12V DC water pump that we picked up from RV supplier J.C. Whitney. Unfortunately it doesn't pump air to eliminate remaining water from the tube after the bag is empty.. it also requires a massive battery because it pulls one Amp during operation.

Final Project

For our final project this semester, Shalini and I are creating a system whereby a user can empty his own leg bag (catheter system) into a handicapped accessible toilet.
